Pilates for elderly

The Pilates method has been a proven and clearly established training method for some time, not only because the exercises are easy to implement, but also because the exercises can be done by virtually any age group: teenagers, middle aged and even elderly, making Pilates unique in its approach.

Fitness and aging

Many fitness training programs focus on intense training on certain body parts, relying on strength and stamina that can sometimes be denied to people who have gotten older over time. It is a shame that many of the people of over 50 are nowadays denied the strength and vitality training exercises can offer. Furthermore, the goal of fitness (becoming healthy and live longer) tends to become a paradox when it can no longer be done by people with pain or simply older bodies. Everyone knows that people who become older are less capable of physical labor and stress, so why do we ask that in fitness class?

Pilates

Joseph Pilates himself showed that it is possible to become old, despite having physical limits, and healthy by doing exercises. Obviously, these exercises should be written in such a way that everyone can do them. Whereas most fitness exercises focus on materials and machinery, Pilates' method can be used on a floor, a chair or on a training ball. If you read this and think: 'I can't do that!' you might want to think again. Pilates reached a very respectable age and he still practiced his own exercises long after his body started showing the signs of aging. All the Pilates exercises shown on the website of can be done by any age group!

Pilates Research: Does Pilates help?

The results of training with Pilates exercises

Although Pilates has been around decades, only during the last 10 years people have discovered the many benefits of Pilates. For some reason, pilates exercises simply weren't special enough to be of any interest to the majority of people back then. The mystical background of yoga, the apparent results of heavy fitness training or, more recent, the interesting combination of music and training with spinning and zumba simply appealed to the masses more. Yet, Pilates has always been there, and will probably be here for quite some time, for the results of Pilates are exceptional and are starting to get more and more recognised.
Scientific Research

Training programs in general have obviously attracted the scientific world as well, for many instructors claim the most wonderful things about their training programmes. Recent research (sept 2009) has found a significant difference in both flexibility and muscular endurance when it comes to Pilates training. Many other things were found as well, have a look at the excerpt at Goliath
